How Far Can a 2000W Electric Bike Go

We all know why E-Bikes are made with motors. They provide an extra oomph on the pedal so you can pick up speed faster and ride uphill or over long distances without breaking too much sweat. We have E-Bikes rated at many different power levels and one thing we always notice buyers eager to ask is the matter of range—specifically, how far a 2000W electric bike can go.

 

Unfortunately, we can’t just dish out a straight answer. Now before you scold us for not knowing exactly how far a particular motor can take you then bear with us so can explain well the meaning of wattage and why it is not the only essential thing for your bike’s range.

 

What Does Wattage Mean in E-Bikes?

An E-Bike’s wattage is a measure of how powerful the bike is, and it indicates how much juice the motor can suck from the battery to give you pedal assistance. Wattage determines the rotational force applied on the steed’s wheels which determines things like acceleration, climbing and how much distance you can cover.  

 

You will find E-Bikes rated from 250W to 1000W and above. Now for 250W to 500W motors, the amount of power of the line is going to be smaller compared to 700W or 1000W motors meaning you won’t be able to accelerate faster, take on tough hills, carry heavy cargo or cover long distances.

 

Now for a 2000W motor, that’s some excellent oomph even for heavy riders or transporting heavy cargo. You should be able to push far with such a motor. That being said, one cannot reckon the range of an E-Bike simply by looking at the numbers on its motor.

 

There are other factors that influence how far you can go on your e bike. Understanding the factors in play will help you make decisions that get the most adventures out of your steed machine.

 

Battery Capacity

Motors provide a significant boost to the pedal allowing you to pick up speed faster, climb hills or even transport heavy cargo. You will be able to accelerate even faster on E-Bikes with powerful motors than say a 250W or 350W machine.

 

That being said, you have to remember the motor itself is powered by a battery, and 2000W motors demand a lot of juice especially under heavy loads.

 

E-bikes battery capacities start from 250Wh, to 350Wh, 400Wh, 600Wh and higher. If you want a reasonable performance, like say to be able to travel 20 to 53 miles, you require at least 500Wh is the minimum amount of juice.

 

Even so, you’ll be limited in terms of the amount of cargo you can carry, terrains you can travel and the pedal assistance you can get. If you want to cover some sweet miles or climb challenging hills, get a bigger battery - - preferably lithium-ion for reliable performance.

 

Remember, your battery is only as good as the level of care you give it. That means overcharging and storing in extremely hot or cold conditions are a no. Cold conditions increase internal resistance meaning your battery won’t be able to charge properly or deliver the amount of juice you want.

 

Hot conditions or overcharging makes them hot, hence killing internal components. The same thing happens when you deny charge. A buildup of lead sulfate crystals on the plates kills internal components. Always store your e bike in a cool dry place to avoid battery damage.

 

Riding Conditions

Different landscapes offer different levels of resistance and demand on the motor and therefore battery life. Flat or paved surfaces won’t offer much resistance to your riding as opposed to when going uphill or against strong headwinds.

 

So, get a powerful battery anytime you plan on shredding off-road terrains or riding on uneven and loose surfaces. Otherwise, prepare for a shorter range.  

 

The Weight on the Bike

E-bikes motors demand more battery juice to provide pedal assistance to heavy riders or when transporting heavy cargo. Of course, 1500W and 2000W e-bikes are more powerful than low watt e bikes, even for heavier riders looking to tackle some sweet hills or go farther.

 

That being said, you won’t be able to cover much more distance than say if a smaller weight person was using the bike - - unless you get an even bigger battery. You’ll need more oomph on the pedals if there’s more weight on your e-bike.

 

Lastly, beyond the amount of stress on the bike, the level of pedal assist determines how long the battery will last and the amount of distance you’ll be able to cover. So instead of just cranking it up and cruising then consider a strategic riding plan that combines manual pedaling on easy stretches and pedal assist on tough sections of the road.

 

In other words, if you want a longer ride on your e bike, the motor power matters but just a little bit. Sooner or later, every motorhead realizes that the battery helps those who help themselves. Don’t depend so much on pedal assist or put too much pressure on your steed machine and your battery will support a longer ride.
